Prairie
Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis calligaster calligster):
The
Prairie Kings are really neat animals. They
are small, but heavy bodied animals, and usually very docile.
They can be found as far east as Maryland, as far west as Illinois, and
as far south as Texas (in the eastern part of the state).
As stated, they don’t get very long (approx. 24” – 40”), but they
develop quite a bit of girth for snakes their size.
The Prairie King’s diet in the wild consists
of rodents, lizards,
birds,
other snakes, and eggs – but mostly rodents.
They are found commonly in grass lands and wooded areas. They are good burrowers,
and aren’t easily found or seen due to their camouflage coloring.
I
only have one pair of these animals. The
female is albino. They are an
unrelated pair, and not proven breeders, so I’m not sure if I will have any offspring
this year (or any other year for that matter).
I have no idea if the male is het. for albinism, so if this pair does
have offspring I can probably only hope to produce some that have a %50 chance
of being het. for albinism.
(Sorry for the washed out appearance on the albino female pictured below the wild-type male.)
