San Luis Potosi Mountain Kingsnake – AKA “Mex-Mex” (Lampropeltis mexicana mexicana) & Variable Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis mexicana thayeri):
Mex
Mex are found in northeastern Mexico: Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, Coahuila,
Nuevo Leon, Zacatecas and Guanajuato. Mex
Mex prefer dry (but not desert) areas. The Mex Mex is varying shades of gray
with orange saddles or blotches.
The range for Thayeri is almost exclusively in the
Tamaulipan desert areas. Thayeri habitat is often rocky, mountainous areas, and
the The Thayeri’s appearance can vary greatly, which is why they are called
Variable Kingsnakes. They can
have a “tri-color”
appearance, they can be all black (or melanistic), and
they can be a buckskin to bright yellow color with
orange and gray saddles. All of
these different patterns can actually emerge from one clutch of eggs.
This makes breeding these guys fun and exciting.
Both
are small, beautiful animals.
Of
breeding stock, I have a 3.4 ratio of Mex Mex, and many of my females double clutch each year.
Of Thayeri, I have a 1.2 ratio or
breeders with one more pair that should be sexually mature by 2006.
Though I produce many Mex Mex, I tend to sell out of them by February.
A local retailer likes to buy my stock.

Both
animals’ natural diet is primarily lizard.
So sometimes getting the hatchlings feeding on mice can be tough.
I won’t sell these animals until they have fed at least four times on
unscented pinkies. These animals
stay small (approx. 24” – 32”) and are very docile and easy to handle.
